Undergarments.

So, we've all had to do it:  throw away a favorite... ummm... unmentionable kind of garment.  You know - the ones that go under your clothes... the ones that lift and tuck and shape and protect and...  I know you know which ones I'm talking about.

I don't know about you, but I usually wait a month (or a couple) too late to throw them out.  I hate doing it - but sometimes, you just have to.  The elastic is too stretched.  The fibers that are supposed to hold everything Just So just don't.  There are holes in very odd places.

The job of undergarments is to cling.  Cling.  Stay in place.  Don't let go.  And there comes a point where they quit doing those things. They're just not good anymore.

We do it, too.  We quit clinging.  We quit staying in place.  We let go.

God gave Jeremiah a very odd task.  He had to buy a new loin cloth (think Underoos minus the elastic and  Wonder Woman and add some kind of belt to tie it to you).  After wearing it, he had to bury it for a while... and then go and dig it up.  It was rotten.  Jeremiah describes it as "good for nothing".

And then God says this:

For as the loincloth clings to the waist of a man, so I made the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah cling to me ... that they might be for me a people, a name, a praise, and a glory, but they would not listen.

Ummm... did God just compare us to pre-elastic, pre-Wonder-Woman Underoos?

Yes.

And it's a beautiful, perfect picture.  I love it so much, I think I might just have to type this verse up and put it in my underwear drawer.  He wants us to cling to Him.  He wants our lives to be wrapped around Him and in doing so, we become a people, a name, a praise and a glory for Him.

But just like Israel and Judah, our stubborn hearts keep us from listening... we stretch where we should remain taunt; we let go of the Truth we're to hold on to; we let Satan tear holes in our hearts.

Hmmm...
I think I have something new to pray about when I get dressed in the morning.
