Reflections on the Evening
Darkening earlier with this storm
Cold, damp winter
Stealing the evening light we should have
I am folding towels on the table
Old beach towels used for work now
Not play
And you, sawing, drilling, fixing
A project more for me than for you
We would have handled this differently
When we started
In the first seasons of our marriage
But we are a little older
A little wiser
Sanctified just a little bit more
We are better
I am content to leave you alone with your project
To sit downstairs with you upstairs
I am fine
I don't feel rejected or isolated
I don't worry you don't like me
It's just a normal Saturday evening
Is this who we will be when we are old
I think it is fine
Epilogue
You came to sit with me
After your tools were put away
I told you about a poem I had heard
And we talked about literature
And why we like what we like
It's just a normal Saturday evening
Is this who we will be when we are old
I know it is fine
Epilogue
You came to sit with me
After your tools were put away
I told you about a poem I had heard
And we talked about literature
And why we like what we like
It's just a normal Saturday evening
Is this who we will be when we are old
I know it is fine
